A flight schedule packed with summer classics and insider tips

22.03.2019

A summer packed with sunshine destinations, and a sprinkling of lesser-known favourites – the new summer flight schedule at Cologne/Bonn Airport will be coming into force as of 31 March. Holidaymakers heading for warmer climes, families with children, those off for a city break or business travellers – all of these groups will find the routes they are looking for in the new schedule. This season, 24 airlines will be offering flights to a total of 127 destinations in 35 different countries. Five of the destinations in the summer schedule will be completely new.

"Our new summer flight schedule provides our passengers with interesting destinations for a wide range of travel needs. For example, alongside the traditional holiday destinations in the Mediterranean, you will also find countless exciting metropolises for city breaks and this year there are also a number of insider tips for those who like something more individual", Johan Vanneste, chair of the management board of Cologne/Bonn Airport, tells us.

Two of the new destinations which offer something more unusual can be found in Ryanair's summer flight schedule – one of them is Knock in Ireland. Ryanair will be flying to this small town on the west of the island twice a week. Knock is well known in particular as a place of pilgrimage. Every year, 1.5 million believers travel to the small town which has a population of only around 750 – the reason being a reputed appearance by the Virgin Mary in the year 1879.

Ryanair’s second destination for those who prefer something more individual is Bordeaux in the south of France. The airline will be flying to this wine metropolis three times a week throughout the summer. Bordeaux is not only the centre of one of the most famous winegrowing regions in the world. Since 2007, its impressive old city centre has been recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In addition to this, the long sandy beaches of the Atlantic coast are only around 45 kilometres away. Of course, the Irish airline also has plenty of traditional destinations in their flight schedule, as well as some additional sunshine destinations. Ryanair passengers flying from Cologne/Bonn this year have a total of 33 destinations to choose from. There will be 32 flights a week to Palma de Mallorca alone.  Flights on the routes to the major metropolises such as Rome, Bologna and Copenhagen will also be more frequent. As well as the new destinations for Cologne/Bonn—Knock and Bordeaux—the airline will also be adding Palermo on Sicily and Zadar in Croatia to their programme of scheduled flights.

The Lufthansa Group is also providing a colourful mix of destinations for all kinds of travellers this summer. Eurowings, Lufthansa and Austrian Airlines will be offering flights to a total of 70 destinations. New among them is something rather special: This summer, Eurowings will be operating weekly flights to Porto Santo on behalf of the tour operator Olimar. This island, the little sister of Madeira, belongs to Portugal. It is popular above all on account of the 9-kilometre-long, golden yellow sandy beach on the southern coast of the island. The rugged hinterland also attracts those who like a more active holiday.

Alongside popular summer travel destinations such as the Balearic Islands (Eurowings will be offering 39 flights a week to Palma de Mallorca alone), the Canaries, Greece and Turkey, Eurowings and Lufthansa also have an extensive range of destinations in their programme for those who enjoy city breaks – for example, there will be more frequent flights in the summer to Munich, Vienna and Hamburg.

Cologne/Bonn Airport will be welcoming two new airlines this summer: Air Cairo will in future be operating a once weekly flight to Hurghada in Egypt. Sundair will be offering flights on the route from Cologne/Bonn to Malta – likewise once a week.
