Cologne Bonn Airport makes Neste MY

25.06.2021

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) available for airlines to reduce greenhouse gas emissions

Neste, the world’s leading provider of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF), has set up a supply of Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ at Cologne Bonn Airport. By doing so, Neste is helping to meet increasing levels of demand from airfreight and corporate customers at Cologne Bonn Airport. AFS, the leading provider for aviation fuelling services in Germany, supports Neste to serve this market.

Cologne Bonn Airport is one of the first German airports where Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is now available for all airlines. Since Cologne is a major cargo hub in Germany, the availability of SAF will provide global shippers the opportunity to reduce the greenhouse gas emissions caused by their airfreight. The first customer to benefit from this opportunity was Amazon. The first flight powered by Neste MY SAF departing from Cologne was operated by ASL Airlines on behalf of Amazon and took place early June.

“We are proud to be able to offer our airlines sustainable alternative aviation fuels. We are already using numerous technical innovations at Cologne Bonn Airport - from solar panels and LED technology to innovative building services and alternatively powered vehicles and equipment on the apron. Employing Sustainable Aviation Fuel is another important step towards our long-term goal of CO2-neutral flight," explains Johan Vanneste, President & CEO of Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH.

“Despite the challenging business environment, the aviation industry, and the cargo sector in particular, is showing increased commitment to invest in sustainable aviation fuel in order to offer lower-carbon emission options to its customers,” says Jonathan Wood, Vice President Europe, Renewable Aviation at Neste. “We are really pleased to welcome Cologne Bonn Airport to the growing network of airports with SAF availability, and look forward to making further progress in reducing aviation-related greenhouse gas emissions.”

Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel

Neste’s SAF is made from sustainably sourced, renewable waste and residue raw materials. In its neat form and over the life cycle, its use can reduce up to 80% of greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil jet fuel use*. Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel gives an immediate solution for reducing the greenhouse gas emissions of flying. It can be used as a drop-in fuel with existing aircraft engines and airport infrastructure, requiring no extra investments into them. Prior to use, Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel is blended with fossil jet fuel and is then certified to meet ASTM jet fuel specifications. Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel annual production capacity is currently 100,000 tons (approximately 34 million gallons). With the Singapore refinery expansion on the way and an additional investment into the Rotterdam refinery, Neste will have the capacity to produce some 1.5 million tons (515 million gallons) of SAF annually in 2023. Neste is actively working with partners through the supply chain to grow the availability of SAF for the aviation industry globally. The fuel is already available, used in the market and supplied to commercial airlines, business aviation customers and at several airports in Europe and North America, as well as in Asia in Japan.
