Access to the security area

Security concept

In response to the terror attacks in New York on September 11, 2001, the European Parliament and Council agreed on common security regulations for civil aviation. These immediately constituted applicable legislation and had to be implemented swiftly by those participating in civil aviation. At Cologne Bonn Airport, the sensitive security area has been extended to cover the entire apron, cargo and hangar areas as from January 1, 2006. With the exception of the Cologne Bonn Cargo Center, these are all now located the Central Control Point / Gate A.

This means that each person and all objects carried or worn by anyone must be searched before access to the sensitive security area is granted. Vehicles, including their load, are also to be inspected according to a procedure defined by the EU.

For the terminal area, this means that moving from the public area to the waiting room or the aprons can only take place after a search at a control point.

Anyone wishing to drive into the cargo and hangar areas will be controlled at the Central Control Point Gate A; the Central ID Office / Registration is also located here.

On 30.04.2012 the Central Receiving Office opened in Kriegerstrasse for suppliers of merchandise (Airport supplies).

To minimise the amount of individual traffic both into and within the sensitive security area, a parking area for staff and visitors is available outside the sensitive security area. Visitors receive their day permit or permanent ID at the Central ID Office / Registration Point. Before entering the sensitive security area, the visitor/employee is searched according to §8 Aviation Security Act at the staff control point (on the western boundary of the parking area). From there, the employees/visitors are conveyed by shuttle buses, whereby visitors must always be accompanied by an Airport ID card holder.

Stopping area – ID / Registration point

This area is reserved for short-term parking for persons / vehicles (visitors, suppliers, customer service providers, technicians etc.) while permits are being issued. At Car park P5, parking places are available for visitors entering the sensitive security area without their vehicle.

Persons and vehicles are controlled before entry to the sensitive security area

To ensure swift controls and to avoid delays in procedures, the following should be observed:

  • Movements in the sensitive security area should be kept to a minimum
  • The carrying of unnecessary objects on one's person or in vehicles should be avoided when access to the sensitive security area is required, as this prolongs the control procedure and the waiting time.
