A direct route from the Rhineland to Saudi Arabia: Eurowings will be connecting Cologne Bonn Airport with Jeddah from 5 November. This was announced by the airline and the airport at the ITB Berlin Convention on Tuesday.
Eurowings will fly to the harbour city on the Red Sea three times a week from Cologne/Bonn in the winter flight schedule - on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. The flights back to the Rhineland will take place on the same days of the week. A highly modern and efficient Airbus A320neo will be used. The route to Jeddah is the first direct connection from North Rhine-Westphalia to Saudi Arabia.
"Our new Airbus A320neo aircraft are not only the most efficient and quietest medium-haul jets in the world. They also allow us significantly longer ranges, which means we can also reach attractive destinations in the Gulf region non-stop from Germany. We are all the more pleased that we are connecting Eurowings' home airport directly with Saudi Arabia's most important harbour city on the Red Sea for the first time," says Jens Bischof, CEO of Eurowings.
"We are extremely pleased that our important and close partner Eurowings is adding another destination to its already large portfolio in Cologne/Bonn and using a very modern aircraft," says Thilo Schmid, Chairman of the Managing Board at Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH. "For our location, the economy in the region and especially for our passengers, the new connection to Saudi Arabia represents a further development of the great diversity of our route network." After six new destinations that Eurowings will be adding to its summer flight schedule starting at the end of March, including Santiago de Compostela, Chisinau and Samsun, Jeddah is already the airline's seventh new route from Cologne/Bonn this year.
Jeddah has a population of 3.7 million, is a central economic hub in the Arab world with its harbour and is also regarded as the gateway to Mecca, the central pilgrimage site of Islam. The city is home to spectacular sights such as King Fahd's Fountain, which is one of the largest in the world at over 300 metres high. Jeddah's historic centre is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
The flight time between Cologne/Bonn and Jeddah is approximately six hours. The connection to Saudi Arabia can be booked shortly at www.eurowings.com.
