Airport expects 800,000 passengers during fall break

10.10.2018

Cologne/Bonn is about to experience the next big wave of travel: The airport is getting ready for the fall break. Approximately 800,000 passengers are expected between Oct. 12 and Oct. 28. Compared to the previous year, this represents an increase of about 25 percent. This remarkable figure is due to a number of factors: The 2017 fall break was comparatively weak for various reasons, which included the Air Berlin insolvency and the slump in bookings for flights to Turkey. In addition, part of the 2017 holidays fell into the less extensive winter timetable period. The upcoming holidays, on the other hand, will be fully within the busy summer timetable. Moreover, the capacity bottlenecks caused by Air Berlin have now been compensated for, and Turkey is back at the top of the travel list.

"We are looking forward to the upcoming high-traffic days this fall. As in the summer holidays, our employees will give their best to ensure that our passengers will have an easy-going start to their vacation," says Johan Vanneste, CEO of Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH.

Approximately 150,000 passengers are expected for the first holiday weekend (Friday to Sunday). The peak day will probably be at the end of the holidays: The airport expects over 53,000 passengers on 26 October, the last Friday of the fall break. A total of almost 140,000 passengers are expected to take off from or land at Cologne/Bonn on the last holiday weekend (Friday to Sunday).

When it comes to holiday destinations, the Turkish cities of Istanbul and Antalya have the lead, as have the classic holiday favourites Palma de Majorca and the Canary Islands. Top-runners in terms of destination countries are Turkey, Spain, Italy, Greece, Portugal, Egypt and Croatia.

Since the holiday season is likely to increase the traffic volume and the terminals can become crowded, holidaymakers-k should allow extra time for arrival, check-in and security checks to ensure a relaxed start into their vacation. Passengers can find out about current waiting times at security checkpoints on the Internet at www.koeln-bonn-airport.de/fluege/abflug-ankunft.html or inform themselves with the CGN Airport app. Travellers can also get further information on how to get to the Airport from their airline.
