Best ever start to the year

Cologne Bonn Airport has made a successful start into the new year and expanded in passenger transport and in the air cargo sector. In the period from January to March 2018 we clocked up 2.43 million passengers, which is 4 percent more than the year before. Air cargo has also taken a positive turn since the beginning of the year: up until March 208,246 tonnes of cargo goods were handled here at the third largest cargo airport in Germany – a 6 percent plus. This way, in the first quarter Cologne/Bonn Airport reached new record results in both traffic sectors.

“We are very pleased with the latest quarterly figures and these will give our team motivation and tailwind for the rest of the year. We won’t be resting on our laurels, we continue with motivation and commitment to make the Airport fit for the future and the challenges the competition  poses,” says Athanasios Titonis, Airport Managing Director.

The growth driver in passenger transport has been Eurowings and its parent company Lufthansa which, after the insolvency of Air Berlin, expanded its inner-German route network (Munich, Berlin) offering more domestic flights. Eurowings operations route to Palma de Mallorca has also been topped up with the airline now operating a larger aircraft (A330).

Additional passengers also came with the airline TAP Air Portugal with 14 connections a week between Cologne and Lisbon, the Hungarian airline Wizz Air, offering three new destinations (Craiova, Kosice, Tuzla) and the holiday charter SunExpress with more flights to Antalya, Turkey.

The growth rates in the cargo sector were thanks to the express-carriers (UPS, FedEx, DHL). General cargo business also increased (Q1: +22%); here, the driving companies were Egyptair Cargo, MNG Airlines and the Canadian Cargojet Airways.
