1950

The "Köln Bonner Flughafen GmbH zu Porz" is born.

1954

Commissioning of the crosswind runway, the longest runway in Germany at the time.

1957

The NRW Ministry of Economics and Transport takes over the airport from the Royal Air Force. The number of airlines, passengers and freight tonnes increases rapidly.

1961

Commissioning of the large railway, opening of the first duty-free shop.

1963

John F. Kennedy lands in Cologne/Bonn.
500,000 passengers in one year for the first time.

1970

Opening of Terminal 1.

1975

Aircraft noise measurement system with 12 stationary and 1 mobile measuring point goes into operation.

1977

Welcoming the 20 millionth passenger since the airport was founded.
The airport is the workplace for 2,487 employees in 90 companies.

1978

More than 2 million passengers in one year for the first time.

1983

Landing of the space shuttle "Enterprise".

1984

First landing of a Concorde in Cologne/Bonn.

1986

UPS establishes European hub in CGN.

1990

Over 3 million passengers in one year for the first time.

1992

The airport is the workplace for 6,400 employees in 127 companies.

1994

Airport is given the additional name "Konrad Adenauer".
Commissioning of the new tower.

1999

Over 6 million passengers for the first time.

2000

Opening of Terminal 2.

2001

Welcoming the one hundred millionth passenger since the airport was founded.
Airport is the workplace for 9,568 people in 164 companies.

2002

Beginning of the low-cost era with Germanwings and Hapag-Lloyd Express.

2004

Opening of the airport railway station and the Starwalk in Terminal 1.

2005

FedEx launches flights from Cologne/Bonn.
Pope Benedict XVI lands at CGN for World Youth Day.

2006

UPS opens extension to its European air freight hub.

2007

More than 10 million passengers in one year for the first time.
Airport is the workplace for 12,460 employees in 135 companies.

2008

Extension of the post-flight regulation until 2030.
MyClimate enables passengers to make climate donations.

2009

Opening of the Cologne Bonn Cargo Centre (CBCC) and the first Rewe supermarket at an airport.
Construction of the first two photovoltaic systems on building roofs.

2010

Inauguration of the new FedEx transhipment centre for Central and Eastern Europe.

2014

1st place in the Skytrax Award for "Best Regional Airport Europe" for the first time.

2015

2017

Opening of Cologne's first hydrogen refuelling station.
More than 12 million passengers.

2018

General refurbishment of the large runway.
Johan Vanneste becomes the new CEO (until December 2021).

2020

The coronavirus pandemic hits the airport in March.
Passenger numbers collapse, freight remains a global hub.
The new Moxy Hotel celebrates its topping-out ceremony.

2021

NASA's flying observatory Sofia is stationed at the airport for 6 weeks.
Opening of the Moxy airport hotel.

2022

Thilo Schmid becomes the new Chairman of the Management Board of Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH on 1 March. The airport increasingly recovers from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic over the course of the year.

2023

The Airport Operations Control Centre (AOCC) will be launched in spring. All processes relating to passengers, baggage, freight and aircraft are controlled 24/7 in the control centre. The airport is investing more than 10 million in optimising its processes.
