Assisted travel

The PRM service (people with reduced mobility) offers help for people with physical or mental disabilities. On behalf of Cologne Bonn Airport passengers with reduced mobility are accompanied by the German Red Cross.  You will be taken to the aircraft on departure and picked up on arrival. The service is free of charge.

If you need assistance, please inform your airline, your tour operator or your travel agency when booking your flight, at least 48 hours before you travel.

Your airline will pass the information to German Red Cross Assistance team who provides the service on behalf of Cologne Bonn Airport. If you are unable to book your assistance prior to 48 hours before your travel, we will still be able to assist you, but there may be longer waiting times. On your arrival, please report to one of our the call points.

It is not possible to book directly at the airport.

The following international categorisation is used to assess the degree of restriction:

  • WCHR
    Passengers who can ascend and descend steps and move in the aircraft cabin but cannot walk long distances. They are taken to the gate by wheelchair.
  • WCHS
    Passengers who cannot ascend and descend steps but can move in the aircraft cabin. They will be taken to the aircraft door.
  • WCHC
    Passengers who are completely immobile and require a wheelchair to/from the aircraft. They will be taken to the cabin seat or be picked up at arrival. independently and cannot climb stairs. They will be taken to their seat or picked up on arrival.
  • BLND
    Visually impaired or blind passenger.
  • DEAF
    Deaf or hearing-impaired passenger.
  • DPNA (Disabled Passenger with Intellectual or Developmental Disability Needing Assistance)
    Passenger with an intellectual or developmental or a hidden disability (e.g. ADHD, autism, aphasia, dementia).

Please inform your airline if you wish to take mobility aids or an assistance dog with you.

Please display the blue EU parking card clearly visible. The directions to the barrier-free parking spaces in car park 2 can be downloaded as a PDF below.

You are parking for one hour or less?

With a blue EU parking card or a disability card with the symbol aG, H, B or Bl, you can park for one hour free of charge in car park 2 or in the short-term parking zones (P1 short or P1 A).

After entering the car park, please go to the cash desk in P2 (level 4) or to the information desk in Terminal 1. Please show your disability card and ID card, you will receive a discount for one hour.

You are parking for longer than one hour?

If you park for longer than one hour, you will receive a 50% discount on the current parking rate in car park 2 only. Please present your disability card and ID card at the ticket office in P2 (level 4) before leaving the car park.

In both cases the following applies:

  • The disability card holder must be present, as the card is not transferable.
  • Personal data are required for auditing purposes and a copy of the ID card will be made.
  • The discounts do not apply to online rates and reservations.
  • Discounts are granted on a voluntary basis without entitlement to grant.

In car park 2 there are emergency alarm buttons where you can call for help. They are signposted accordingly.

General enquiries

Please make sure that you arrive at the airport early enough to allow sufficient time to check in.

Accompaniment to the terminal

If you would like to be picked up at one of the car parks, kerbside, at the taxi rank or at the long-distance coach terminal, please report to one of the call points. You’ll find them at:

  • Terminal 1: Entrance Check-in 100 / Security control departure level; (outside the building)
  • Terminal 1: Entrance check-in 200; departure level (outside the building)
  • Terminal 1: Entrance 1, Level 0 (opposite the dental practice)
  • Car park 2: Level 4
  • Car park 32/long-distance coach terminal: at the entrance to the building

Check-in

Go to the check-in counter of your airline and tell the staff that you have booked. PRM service. The check-in staff will inform the German Red Cross and show you where to wait (PRM service point). You will be picked up around 50 minutes before departure and escorted to the gate.

Also report to your airline's check-in counter if you have checked-in online (pre-notification alone is not sufficient).

Security check

The PRM attendants will accompany you through security to the gate. Please note the requirements for hand baggage.

Accompanying person

One accompanying person is permitted. Families with little children can stay together.

Own wheelchair or mobility aids

Wheelchairs and other mobility aids must be registered. Please check with your airline about the conditions of carriage for transporting your wheelchair or power wheelchair. As a rule, Generally, the transport of up to two mobility aids is free of charge.

You can hand over your wheelchair as checked baggage (you will then receive an airport wheelchair) or stay seated until you get to the gate.

Assistance dog

Your assistance dog must be registered when you book your flight. Tell your airline about your assistance dog at least 48 hours before you travel. For departure, make sure that you have all documentation ready.
