More than 1.7 million passengers use the airport.
Reliable processes in the terminals and on the apron.
Lots of travel joy – and a positive summary: Cologne Bonn Airport welcomed more than 1.7 million passengers who took off or landed at the airport during the summer holidays in North Rhine-Westphalia. This means that passenger numbers in the past six and a half weeks were once again above the already high level of the summer holidays in previous years.
‘The summer holidays are among the most challenging weeks of the year for our airport. The fact that operations in the terminals and on the apron ran so smoothly even during this peak travel period is a great testament to the efficiency of our team,’ said Thilo Schmid, Chairman of the Management Board of Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH. ‘My thanks go to all the employees in our TeamCGN and our partners, who all worked together with great commitment to ensure that the many passengers were able to start their holidays relaxed and return home refreshed.’
The busiest day at the airport during the summer holidays was Sunday, 27 July 2025: More than 41,000 passengers travelled via Cologne/Bonn for the traditional ‘changeover’ halfway through the holidays. The busiest weekend was accordingly the third weekend of the holidays (25 to 27 July) with around 121,000 passengers.
Once again, classic sun and beach destinations in Europe were particularly popular in 2025. Turkey was the top holiday destination with around 530,000 travellers, followed by Spain (373,000) and Italy (128,500). The most popular destination during the holidays was the Turkish beach resort of Antalya with around 250,000 passengers. It was followed by the Spanish sun island of Mallorca (190,000). City breaks were also popular, for example to Istanbul (130,000).
Passenger numbers in Cologne/Bonn will remain high in the coming weeks as many passengers continue to head off on holiday: in September and October, with the two-week autumn half-term break, more than one million travellers are expected to depart from or arrive at the airport.
