The start of the peak travel season: With the start of the Easter holidays next Friday, Cologne Bonn Airport is expecting the first travel wave of the year, when up to 33,000 travellers take off and land at the airport every day. From 22 March, the last day of school, up to and including 7 April, the airport is expecting a total of around 460,000 passengers.
"Cologne/Bonn has had a very good start to the year. In the first few months, we had significantly more passengers than in the same period last year. We are now looking forward to the peak travel season, which traditionally begins around Easter and continues until autumn," says Thilo Schmid, Chairman of the Management Board at Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH. "As an airport, together with our process partners, we have made targeted preparations for the increasing passenger volume in order to ensure that our guests have a pleasant start to their holiday."
Around 77,000 passengers are expected in Cologne/Bonn on the first holiday weekend from Friday to Sunday. Over the Easter weekend - from Good Friday up to and including Easter Monday - around 107,000 passengers are expected. Easter Sunday also marks the changeover from the winter to the summer flight schedule at the airport. On the last holiday weekend, around 97,000 travellers are expected to use the airport from Friday to Sunday. The peak day during the holidays is Friday 5 April, when more than 33,000 passengers will take off and land in Cologne/Bonn.
The most popular destination during the Easter holidays is Spain with around 110,000 passengers. Of these, around 49,000 passengers chose Palma de Mallorca as their destination from Cologne/Bonn during the two weeks. Many passengers are also travelling to Turkey (around 100,000 passengers), Great Britain (around 38,000 passengers) and Italy (around 37,000 passengers) during the holidays.
Travel advice for passengers
The airport provides various services to offer travellers comfort when departing on holiday. For example, there are stations for independent baggage drop-off and the option of booking a fixed time slot for the security check via "CGNGateWay". Passengers can also contribute to a relaxed start to their journey with good planning and preparation. Here are some helpful tips:
- Check in online.
- Check with your airline or tour operator about the opening hours of the check-in counters and allow enough time.
- Check in good time whether your ID is valid and which travel document you need for your journey.
- If you are booking with Eurowings, use the evening before check-in and the self-bag drop-off facilities in Terminal 1.
- Book a time slot for the security check via the airport's homepage at "CGNGateWay".
- If possible, please take only one piece of hand baggage with you.
- Liquids and creams (up to 100 ml per container) must be packed in a resealable 1-litre plastic bag.
- Do not pack technical devices at the bottom of your hand luggage; they must be presented at the checkpoint.
