Exciting insights, creative hands-on activities, and a children’s press conference.
Young guests take center stage: To mark World Children’s Day on Sunday (September 20), Cologne/Bonn Airport invited 90 children to a varied behind-the-scenes tour of the airport. Throughout the day, the young visitors experienced numerous aspects of the airport, as well as its processes and workflows, up close.
“The airport fascinates adults and children alike. That’s why it’s a matter close to our hearts to give children from our region the opportunity to discover our unique workplace up close,” said Thilo Schmid, Chairman of the Management Board of Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH, who answered many questions from the young guests during a children’s press conference.
Hands-On Activities and Press Conference
At several stations, the children were able to learn about the airport and the work done there in a playful way. They also gained exciting insights into the work of the aircraft de-icing team and the airport fire department.
A special moment was provided by Aachen-based Professor Dr. Holger Hoos, who is also a pilot: He landed at the airport in an aircraft and then explained to the children, in a clear and vivid way, how flying actually works.
The day concluded with a children’s press conference featuring special guest Thilo Schmid. During the event, the young visitors had the opportunity to ask the Chairman of the Management Board of Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH their own personal questions and learn more about the airport, his day-to-day work, and the people who ensure that operations can run around the clock.
The children and teenagers, who were able to experience the airport from a unique perspective, were accompanied by representatives from the Cologne-based organizations Kindernöte e.V., Süße Zitronen e.V., Kinder- und Jugendhospizdienst Köln-Ost, the Sharky Swimming School, and the Bundeswehr Social Welfare Organization.
The Cologne-based airline LEAV Aviation supported World Children’s Day at the airport with goodie bags and a hands-on station featuring coloring pages. The airline also brought along its mascot, LEAVI. The Sharky Swimming School organized a paper airplane contest in collaboration with the event management agency greencentive.
