With the start of the North Rhine-Westphalia summer break on July 18, the largest travel surge of the year begins at Cologne Bonn Airport. Over the next six and a half weeks, the airport expects approximately 1.8 million travelers.

The busiest period will be the fourth weekend of the vacation in mid-August, with around 122,700 passengers. The peak day will be August 9, when around 42,000 travelers will depart from or arrive at Cologne Bonn Airport.

“We are very pleased that demand for vacation travel continues to rise and that, with 14 additional destinations, we can offer more choice than last year. Together with our partners, we have prepared thoroughly for the vacation season and are doing everything we can to ensure our passengers have a pleasant and relaxed start to their vacations,” says Thilo Schmid, CEO of Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH.

Popular vacation destinations

During the summer months, 26 airlines will offer flights to 115 international destinations in 38 countries. The most popular vacation destinations — just as in previous years — are Turkey and Spain, followed by Greece and Italy. The country with the largest growth is Greece, with about 20 percent more passengers than last year.

The most popular flight destinations are once again Antalya and Palma de Mallorca. For city breaks, Istanbul, London, and Barcelona are particularly popular.

Advice for preparing for your trip

This summer, passengers will benefit from numerous investments in comfort and service. Modern CT technology at security checkpoints ensures more efficient processes, while new dining and shopping options further enhance the quality of the experience in the terminals.

Here are a few tips for preparing for your trip:

Shortly before the start of the summer break, the Federal Police also draws attention to the problem of unattended luggage. Unattended luggage triggers police action, which disrupts operations and may result in fees for the person responsible. Travelers are therefore asked to keep an eye on their luggage at all times.
