New security checkpoint opens: Airport sets new standards for travel Comfort and efficiency

A timely start before the summer break begins.
Modern CT technology, a new design, and optimized processes.
The airport has invested approximately 25 million euros.

Faster and more convenient access to the gate: Cologne Bonn Airport officially opened its fully modernized security checkpoint today (July 14, 2026). After just a few months of renovation, travelers now have access to eleven state-of-the-art security lanes equipped with the latest CT technology. This makes Cologne/Bonn the first major airport in Germany to have fully equipped its security checkpoint with this technology.

The airport invested approximately 25 million euros in the redesign. The new security checkpoint is also a central component of the comprehensive “Next Chapter” modernization program, through which the airport’s terminals are being modernized step by step.

“Today’s opening is an important milestone for the future of our airport,” says Thilo Schmid, CEO of Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH. “Our new security checkpoint is among the most modern facilities in Europe. It combines the highest security standards with significantly greater convenience for our passengers while also strengthening our airport’s competitiveness. This investment is a clear commitment to growth, quality, and customer satisfaction.”

New limit on liquids and special kids lane

Thanks to the new CT scanners, travelers no longer need to remove electronic devices and liquids from their carry-on luggage. The limit for carrying liquids has been raised to two liters per container. At the same time, the new systems enable faster processing. The technical modernization is complemented by a new lighting and sound design, an intuitive wayfinding system, and a specially designed family lane, the so-called “Kids Lane.” Here, steps allow children to place their luggage on the conveyor belt and take it off again on their own.

“Our goal was to take safety, efficiency, and the quality of the passenger experience to a new level,” says Airport Managing Director Cenk Özöztürk. “The new security checkpoint is far more than a technical upgrade. It represents a modern, digital airport that consistently puts the needs of its travelers first. With optimized processes, we’re creating a travel experience that’s more comfortable, less stressful, and better prepared for the future.”

Widespread support from airport partners

The airport’s numerous partners also welcome the opening of the new security checkpoint.

Teresa De Bellis-Olinger, Mayor of Cologne, emphasized: “With this renovation, Cologne/Bonn Airport is setting new standards nationwide and underscoring its role as a modern leader in innovation. For the city of Cologne and the entire region, the new security checkpoint is a true milestone that will strengthen our position as a hub for business and tourism in the long term. As the largest shareholder, we are proud that Cologne/Bonn Airport is consistently investing in the future here, securing important jobs, and making travel significantly less stressful for citizens starting today.”

Oliver Krischer, Minister of Environment, Nature and Transport of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, stated: “The use of this state-of-the-art CT technology allows processes to be streamlined. This benefits passengers, and at the same time, the new technology enhances aviation security.”

Max Kownatzki, CEO of Eurowings, said: “For many passengers, the security check is the moment that determines whether their trip gets off to a relaxed start. This makes innovations that make the process noticeably more pleasant all the more important. As the largest airline at the airport, we have supported this forward-looking project from the very beginning, because it embodies exactly what Eurowings stands for: making travel easier. Together with Cologne/Bonn Airport, we are creating an even more comfortable travel experience—so that for many of our guests, that vacation feeling begins right at the airport.”

The modernization of the security checkpoint is part of the comprehensive expansion of Cologne Bonn Airport. In addition to new dining options, modernized lounges, and digital services, the airport is continuously investing in improving infrastructure and the passenger experience.

Background

As of January 1, 2025, Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH assumed responsibility for organizing passenger and baggage screening in accordance with Section 5 of the Aviation Security Act and has been managing these operations independently ever since.

The Federal Police bears responsibility for ensuring aviation security. In particular, it is responsible for statutory legal and technical oversight, the protection of screening checkpoints, and other essential tasks to ensure compliance with aviation security standards.

A private security service provider is responsible for conducting the security screenings. After the airport company assumed responsibility for organizing the screenings, it contracted this provider. Following Frankfurt and Berlin, Cologne/Bonn is the third airport in Germany to organize its own security screening processes.

As early as 2023, the airport put an Airport Operation Control Center (AOCC) into operation. This is where all key operational processes converge to make procedures even more efficient. In this control center, security service providers, the Federal Police, and airport staff, among others, work closely together side by side.
