Due to the strike called by the trade union ver.di by security staff at the passenger control centre, regular passenger flight operations were not possible at Cologne/Bonn Airport today, Thursday. 93 passenger flights (62 take-offs, 31 landings) were cancelled. The flight schedule originally included 136 passenger flights (69 take-offs, 67 landings).
Most of the terminals remained completely empty. As airlines and tour operators had informed passengers in advance about the disruption, they did not even travel to the airport. Individual flights were diverted to other airports or rescheduled for departure times outside the strike period. A total of around 12,000 travellers were affected by the cancellations at Cologne/Bonn.
Ver.di has called for strikes by security staff at several German airports, including Cologne/Bonn Airport, in light of ongoing wage negotiations for aviation security staff. According to the union, security staff at the passenger checkpoint were to stop working all day on Thursday between midnight and midnight.
In addition, the union also called security staff at the personnel and goods checkpoints to strike at short notice and unannounced late on Wednesday evening. As a result, employees were and are only able to access the security area with considerable delays. The strike there is also expected to last until midnight.
There may also be disruptions or delays beyond the actual end of the strike.
