Pilot project for efficient digital energy management

RheinEnergie AG and Infosys are driving the energy transition forward – test operation at Cologne/Bonn Airport

RheinEnergie AG and Infosys, a global leader in next-generation digital services, are launching their first cooperation in the German energy market. With the help of an intelligent energy platform, they want to support companies from industry and the real estate sector in driving the energy transition and their respective sustainability agendas forward. RheinEnergie and Infosys will now implement the platform in a pilot project for Cologne Bonn Airport to optimise the energy and heating supply there.

‘We have been working for many years to position ourselves as a sustainable airport and to shape the mobility of the future. The cooperation with RheinEnergie and Infosys will help us to simplify the complex requirements of the sustainable conversion of the energy and supply infrastructure and to achieve our sustainability goals – for travellers, for our environment and for our neighbourhood,’ says Thilo Schmid, CEO of Flughafen Köln/Bonn GmbH.

As part of the collaboration, Infosys will support RheinEnergie and its customers in using the digital energy service platform. This helps companies to save costs, improve energy efficiency and accelerate the implementation of their sustainability goals. Not only will cutting-edge technologies in the areas of cloud, data science, artificial intelligence and industry 4.0 be implemented, but generation, storage, energy consumption and energy markets will also be linked. This enables companies to control their energy flows intelligently, select the most cost-effective energy sources in real time and increase profits from the on-site generation of renewable energies, as well as optimising their investments in facilities.

Pilot project at Cologne Bonn Airport: sustainably reducing emissions

The new digital platform is starting its test operation at a long-standing partner of RheinEnergie: Cologne/Bonn Airport. Supported by AI, the project team there can identify optimisation opportunities in the entire energy supply, making it more efficient and thus reducing harmful emissions on site.

‘Innovative technological and digital solutions are essential to realising the energy and heating transition,’ says Stephan Segbers, Chief Sales Officer at RheinEnergie. ‘By combining Infosys' global expertise, cutting-edge technologies such as cloud and AI, and our experience in energy services, we can offer our customers sustainable and intelligent solutions for the efficient management of their energy systems.’

RheinEnergie has been providing gas, electricity, cooling and heating to Cologne Bonn Airport for many years. The partners jointly operate several energy generation plants for this purpose. In order to further reduce CO2 emissions, more renewable energy plants are being built at the site itself and in the immediate vicinity of the airport. Climate protection has been on the airport's agenda for more than a decade. The company is decarbonising its entire heating supply and aims to be completely climate-neutral by 2045.

‘The energy landscape is undergoing significant change – and we are committed to helping companies across Europe manage their energy transitions,’ adds Ashish Kumar Dash, Executive Vice President and Global Head – Services, Utilities, Resources and Energy, Infosys. ’Our solutions enable companies to gain a deeper understanding of their energy consumption patterns, identify optimisation opportunities and ultimately achieve their decarbonisation goals.’.
