Over the next few weeks, the airport will be welcoming passengers, fans and teams to the "Host City Cologne" in true European Championship style. A special highlight is the giant "Giant Trophy", a 3.5 metre high replica of the European Championship trophy. Unique souvenir photos can be taken here. The "Welcome Desks" are also located near the trophy, where volunteers will be on hand to assist travellers. Passengers are transported on the apron in an electric bus designed in the European Championship design.
In recent months, the airport has made intensive preparations for the tournament and the associated increase in the number of travellers. It has been in close contact with the city of Cologne's organisation team, the authorities, German air traffic control and other partners. Five matches will take place in Cologne during the European Championships, four matches in the group stage and one round of 16 match. There will be additional flights for these matches in particular, but the airport is also expecting full aircraft with many fans for the matches in other NRW cities. A total of around 160 additional passenger flights and around 30,000 additional passengers are expected. With the national teams from Hungary and Scotland as well as the team from England, two of Germany's group opponents and a tournament co-favourite will land at the airport.
